Review: Playing for Keeps with Gerard Butler

Playing for Keeps
Thirties-style battle -of-the-sexes romantic comedy is about as deep as they were, but improved through Gerard Butler’s dynamically appealing persona.  His big time soccer superstar turned jobless local soccer coach mass charms women like a pleasant plague and Butler certainly carries it off.  It’s the kind of role Cary Grant would have nailed.  The story is less compelling as he and his engaged ex telegraph their desire to be reunited while hiding behind convention and he literally hides from packs of lovesick soccer moms.  Misunderstandings pile up but someone with those Butler baby blues can surely work things out.  Uma Thurman and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a small town soccer moms is inspired and Jessica Biel as his ex- is interesting too as they reportedly lit a real life flame during the making of the film.
